Royal Deeside the area and its attractions
The Cults Hotel lies at the
‘Gateway to Royal Deeside’ on the A93 just three
miles west of Aberdeen city centre. Start your journey from
here along the magnificent River Dee valley. Starting high
in the Cairngorm Mountains, the River Dee runs east through
some of Scotland’s finest scenery, Cambus o’
May, Dinnet, Aboyne, Banchory, arriving at its estuary
in Aberdeen.
Balmoral Castle
Located in the shadow of
Lochnagar Mountain, one and half hours drive from
the Cults Hotel is Balmoral Castle, holiday home of the
Queen and the Royal Family - a much visited attraction
by visitors from all continents. During April to July each
year the public can gain entry to the ballroom of this
magnificent castle that dates back to the 1480’s.
It first became the private royal holiday residence of
Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert in 1852
after they had visited this part of the Scottish Highlands,
where they fell in love with the scenery and the local
folks who lived close by.
Highland Games
During the summer months
a total of 15 traditional Highland Games
take place at various locations from the Cornhill Highland
Games in the month of June to Scotland’s biggest
and most famous Highland Games event, the Braemar Gathering
in September. Queen Elizabeth II is patron of the Braemar
Gathering and attends the event every year attracting
thousands of visitors from all across the globe.
The Lonach Gathering
Another key event is The Lonach
Gathering which is truly unique due to its March of the Clansmen – The
Men of Lonach. Armed with pikes and battle-axes they march
around the arena. This is a very friendly gathering and
in recent years, famous celebrities can be found at Lonach.
Billy Connolly is a resident of the area and screen actors
Robin Williams and Michael Douglas have been seen at the
event.
